Georgia Tech’s preparations for Georgia may now begin in earnest.
Saturday, the Yellow Jackets administered a 66-7 beating to Alabama A&M, a completely overmatched outfit that didn’t gain a first down until late in the first half.
On a chilly afternoon at Bobby Dodd Stadium, Tech scored on its first eight possessions, reaching the end zone on all but one of them. Coach Paul Johnson began using backups as early as the third possession of the game, when he put quarterback Justin Thomas and B-back Broderick Snoddy into the game.
Tech scored less than three minutes into the game on a three-yard run by Synjyn Days, and held a 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Third-stringers and walk-ons took most of the snaps in the second half.
Tech improved to 7-4 and, barring an unlikely appearance in the ACC championship game, guaranteed itself a winning season. With Duke and Miami both winning Saturday, the Jackets would need those two teams to lose next weekend (to North Carolina and Pittsburgh, respectively) and also would require Virginia Tech to lose to Virginia.
Tech can turn its focus on Georgia, which has defeated the Jackets 11 out of the past 12 seasons. The teams will play next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
