Georgia State football coach Trent Miles said neither he nor anyone he knows have had any discussions with anyone from Ball State about its vacant head coaching position.
The website footballscoop.com tweeted on Tuesday that Ball State has reached out to Miles and that talks were progressing. The Cardinals’ job came open when Pete Lembo resigned to become offensive coordinator at Maryland.
“I have not talked to anyone but Santa and his elves for my kids,” Miles said in a text message. “Any job rumors are just rumors.
“We just got back from our bowl game and are looking forward to next season and moving into Turner Field.”
After going 1-23 in his first two seasons, Miles led the Panthers to a 6-7 record this season, which included a win at Ball State. The Panthers were beaten by San Jose State in the Cure Bowl. It was the the Panthers' first bowl game.
Miles, a native of Indiana, has two years left on the contract that he signed after he accepted the Georgia State job in Dec. 2012. He received a pay increase earlier this year to make his base salary $463,500. Athletic director Charlie Cobb said two weeks ago that he wants to keep Miles as coach and the two will talk after the season about a contract extension and other things that the program may need to create sustainable success. Cobb has yet to respond to a text asking if Ball State has asked for permission to talk to Miles.
Georgia State was recently selected as the winning bidder for the Turner Field property. The university along with its partners want to turn the Braves home into a stadium for football, construct another stadium for baseball and build mixed-use retail and residential on the property.
Miles said after the loss to San Jose State that he wants to keep his coaching staff together and was looking forward to next season. The Panthers return eight starters on offense and nine on defense and should be one of the favorites to win the Sun Belt next season.
