Georgia State football coach Shawn Elliott named his coaching staff Thursday.

Elliott, the third coach in the program’s short history, did not keep any of the assistants that were on previous coach Trent Miles’ staff.

Travis Trickett, formerly in the same position at Florida Atlantic, will be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Owls set school records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2016.

Nate Fuqua, formerly in the same position at Wofford, will be the defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach. Wofford’s defense was fifth in FCS in total defense in 2016.

Chris Collins, formerly the linebackers coach at Western Carolina, will coach safeties.

Trent McKnight, formerly at Samford, will coach wide receivers.

Sam Shade, also formerly at Samford, will caoch cornerbacks.

Jess Simpson, formerly head coach of Buford High School, will coach the defensive line.

Josh Stepp, formerly head coach Lexington (S.C.) High School, will coach running backs and tight ends.

Cedric Williams, formerly at South Carolina, will coach the offensive line.

Rusty Wright, former linebackers and special teams coordinator at Tennessee-Chattanooga, will coach inside linebackers.

Elliott said Wednesday that, “I hired the best coaches that I think will raise the level of the program. It has nothing to do with FBS, FCS or high school level.”
