Georgia Southern 1st, Georgia State 9th in Sun Belt poll

Georgia State’s football team was picked to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the Sun Belt by the league’s coaches.

The conference released the results of the poll on Friday.

The Panthers, which went 1-11 last season, return 49 letterwinners and 19 starters. They will open the season hosting Charlotte on Sept. 4 in the Georgia Dome.

Georgia Southern was picked to repeat as conference champion. The Eagles went 9-3 overall last season and return 13 starters.

The results of the poll (with first-place votes in parenthesis):

1. Georgia Southern (6) 110 pts

2. UL Lafayette (3) 108 pts

3. Arkansas State (1) 96 pts

4. Appalachian St. 82 pts

5. Texas State 78 pts

6. South Alabama (1) 68 pts

7. UL Monroe 59 pts

8. Troy 39 pts

9. Georgia State 32 pts

10. New Mexico St. 30 pts

11. Idaho 24 pts
