South Carolina's quarterbacks coach, credited with QB Stephen Garcia's improvement despite a series of disciplinary problems, is now in trouble himself.

G.A. Mangus was arrested early Tuesday in Greenville, where he was attending a coaching convention, and charged with "nuisance conduct," The State newspaper of Columbia reported.

He has been suspended by head coach Steve Spurrier.

"G.A. has been suspended from all coaching activities until this matter is resolved," Spurrier said Tuesday in statement. "We are disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly."

Greenville police officers "observed Mangus ... urinating on the street curb and roadway," according to a police report obtained by the newspaper. Mangus was "unsteady on his feet and he had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person," the report stated.

The officer said Mangus's speech was slurred and he was "uncooperative in providing straight answers," the report stated. Mangus was handcuffed and taken to the Greenville jail.

He faces a $470 fine for the incident, The State said. He has been released from jail. A court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26, just eight days before the Gamecocks open the 2011 season against East Carolina.

Mangus, 42, played backup quarterback at Florida under Spurrier in 1990 and 1991. This would be his third season as South Carolina's quarterbacks coach.

Garcia has now been suspended five times -- twice last spring -- since he arrived on campus in January 2007. Several of the suspensions have involved alcohol. He had his best season in 2010, throwing for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns.
