Southern University has established a fund to provide financial assistance to Devon Gales, who was injured in Saturday's loss at Georgia.

The third-year sophomore wide receiver was in "good spirits" following surgery Sunday in Athens to stabilize fractures on his neck. Gales will remain at "Athens Regional until he is released to return to Baton Rouge for further treatment," according to a statement released by Southern University.

Gales was injured while blocking on a third-quarter kickoff return. Georgia trainers rushed to the field to assist as Gales laid motionless on the field. Southern has said Gales has movement in his upper body.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt said Sunday he would urge Bulldog fans to "help out," if possible.

The university has set the Devon Gales Fund as a fund-raising platform to help with his recovery. All donations can be made by visiting the Devon Gales Fund website.

Southern coach Dawson Odums told the Athens Banner-Herald: "I talked to him today. He’s speaking and talking and he understands the road that’s in front of him.

"He’s a great, great guy who has the will and determination to overcome whatever problems he may have."
