On April 23, former Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran heard his name called in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft, as the 97th overall pick by the Tennessee Titans.
Curran's decision to forgo his final year of eligibility at Georgia seemed to have paid off, though not without first leading the SEC in tackles in 2009 and building a body of work that identified him as one of the top weakside linebackers of his class.
Curran was the first Bulldog to be drafted in 2010 and the first ever to be drafted by the Titans.
Curran, who attended Brookwood High School, recently visited 360 Football, an academy for many of the top high school recruits in the state. The break was a welcome one, as he continued to prepare himself for the Titans' camp. He spoke with the AJC at the academy. Answers were edited for length.
Q: Do you have any concerns heading into camp?
A: No concerns, really. Football is football, and I’ve been doing this since I was 10. I’m just excited about the opportunity to go out there and pretty much do what I did at Georgia, which is work hard and stay positive. And hopefully, I'll find some success.
Q: What’s one item you need to have with you to camp?
I guess one thing I’m definitely going to need with me is a little devotional. It's got little messages that take about five minutes every morning. It’s really inspirational and something you really need. ... Camp has some long days, so I'll definitely need that motivation. Especially when I know I’m going to have some bad days ... so it's important to me that I help myself to stay positive.
Q: Did you get to keep your helmet from UGA?
A: We didn’t get to keep it. We have to buy our helmets. We got to keep our jerseys, though. My jersey is at home, but I've actually got a couple. My black jersey is at Inoko in Athens at my favorite hibachi restaurant. We’re actually going over there later.
Q: What's your favorite memory from UGA, and what's one game you wish you could do over?
I’ve got so many memories from UGA. One of the biggest ones was the Dawg Walk and walking into the game. That was great. You can’t re-create that. I remember in 2007 we walked out wearing our black jerseys, and that was on my 19th birthday. I think back on that experience, and that’s what I miss the most. That’s my favorite memory. And do over? I would do over pretty much all the Florida games, but my freshman year.
Q: Will you be doing any drafting yourself in fantasy football?
A: I have to get on that. I don’t play, but I’m going to have to get on that. I was surprised to find out a lot of professional guys actually play it. But I’ve never gotten the hang of it, and I just hear people talk about it all the time. So I guess I’ll have to learn.
