Christo Bilukidi, DE

Bracketing Portee on the other side of the line, Bilukidi returns after leading the team in sacks (five) last season. He was elected as one of the team captains and is being listed as a candidate for several preseason national teams.

A.J. Portee, DE

The Mays High alum transferred from Connecticut and quickly climbed the depth chart to earn a starting spot. Because of his quick feet and hands, he is a skilled pass-rusher for a team that had only 15 sacks last season.

Bo Schlechter, QB

Schlechter was slated No. 1 because of the suspensions of Drew Little and Kelton Hill, but he hasn’t practiced as if he’s locked into the job. Coach Bill Curry said Schlechter has done everything coaches have wanted him to with his performances in August.

Malcolm Smith, RB

Smith had seven carries for 38 yards last season as a reserve, but has stood out during August practices. The Panthers need one of their running backs to step up to improve the running game.

Albert Wilson, WR

Wilson’s speed makes him dangerous on special teams, where he returned a kickoff 97 yards against Alabama last season, or at wide receiver, where he caught 19 passes. The Panthers’ defensive backs have had a difficult time keeping up with him in drills and scrimmages.
