Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof is in line to receive a contract extension, athletic director Mike Bobinski said Monday. Bobinski said that he and Roof have had “a very casual conversation” about the matter.

“He’s got a year left and my guess is we’ll take a look at that and probably push it out a little bit, and deservedly so,” Bobinski said.

Bobinski said it will be a decision made in concert with coach Paul Johnson. It would follow the four-year extension given to Johnson Dec. 5.

Roof was given a three-year contract worth $1.65 million when he came to Tech in January 2013 from Penn State, following the 2012 midseason dismissal of defensive coordinator Al Groh and interim coordinator Charles Kelly’s hire at Florida State. After helping the Yellow Jackets improve in scoring defense from 28.3 points per game in 2012 to 22.8 points in 2013, Roof oversaw a unit that lacked experience coming into the 2014 season.

After a dismal start, the Tech defense made considerable progress in the past six games. Most notably, the Yellow Jackets have recorded 17 takeaways in the past six games after gaining 10 in the first seven games. The Jackets allowed 28.3 points per game in the first seven games and 21.3 in the past six.
