Christopher Eubanks advances to third round at NCAA championship

May 26, 2017

Georgia Tech junior Christopher Eubanks is into the round of 16 at the NCAA singles championships for the first time in his career. Eubanks ousted Tulsa’s Or Ram-Harel 6-4, 7-5 Thursday in Athens, becoming the first Tech player to make it this far in the 64-player field since Guillermo Gomez in 2011.

The fifth-seeded Eubanks, who was named ACC player of the year for the second season in a row, will play Texas’ Yuya Ito Friday at 12:30 p.m. for a spot in the quarterfinals.

The last Tech player to advance that far was Bryan Shelton in 1988, whose run ended in the quarters.

“Chris battled through his match (Thursday) and got a straight-set win,” Tech coach Kenny Thorne said in a statement. “The wind conditions were tougher today and his opponent was a totally different style. I love that Chris made adjustments and found the win. Every round is tough so moving on is all that matters. He will be ready for (Friday).”
