Howard University sophomore quarterback Caylin Newton is one of 52 players on the preseason watch list for the 2018 Black College Football player of the year.

Newton, the brother of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, burst onto the national scene last season by leading the Bison, a 45-point underdog, to a 43-40 victory over UNLV

Newton, who prepped at Atlanta’s Grady High School, had 3,185 yards and 25 touchdowns rushing and passing last season.

Morehouse offensive lineman Jean Cyriaque, a first-team All-SIAC preseason selection, was also named to the player of the year watch list. See the complete list here.

Four finalists will be named in November and the winner will receive the Deacon Jones trophy during the Black College Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony next February in Atlanta.
