When the moment arrived, Georgia Tech kicker Harrison Butker was ready to take and make his first career game-winner. Special-teams coordinator Ray Rychleski, had been telling him all week that he would take the game-winning field goal all week, Butker said.
“I was dreaming about it last night, and it just so happened to come up,” Butker said.
Out of Sean Tobin’s snap and Ryan Rodwell’s hold, Butker made the 24-yarder as time expired. While Butker had missed from 30 yards earlier in the game (and also hit a 43-yarder), coach Paul Johnson said that he had “all the faith” that Butker would put it through. It was the first time Tech won a game on the final play since beating Wake Forest in overtime in 2009.
“You’ve just got to treat it like an extra point, no matter the distance,” said Butker, from Westminster. “It just happened to be a short kick, but it doesn’t matter.”
Butker also continued his strong play on kickoffs, picking up four touchbacks on five kickoffs.
