Athens — Georgia's football program stocked up on promising defensive backs in its 2008 recruiting class.

Those guys sure are coming in handy right now.

One of the ’08 signees, Brandon Boykin, has taken over as a starter at cornerback, winning the job vacated by Asher Allen’s early exit to the NFL. And three other members of that signing class — Bacarri Rambo, Makiri Pugh and Sanders Commings — are getting the bulk of the work at safety while starters Reshad Jones and Bryan Evans are out with hamstring injuries and veteran backup Quintin Banks is out with a knee injury.

Rambo, Pugh and Commings were redshirted last season, while Boykin appeared in all 13 games (no starts).

“We all have a good relationship — me, Sanders, Rambo, Pugh,” Boykin said. “All of us except Pugh played some quarterback in high school. We always talk about our quarterback stories: ‘I was better than you in high school,’ that kind of stuff.”

A fifth player signed as a defensive back in ’08, Nick Williams, currently is playing linebacker. Williams also played quarterback in high school.

Boykin effectively won a starting job in spring practice, while Rambo, Pugh and Commings had strong springs and have continued to impress this summer.

“I love the ball skills of these young safeties, and the toughness is coming,” coach Mark Richt said Tuesday.

Richt said Pugh “made some really fine open-field tackles” at safety in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Jones has been sidelined for almost two weeks, and Evans joined him on the sidelines late last week.
