Outside linebacker Davin Bellamy will return to the field for the Troy game.

The redshirt freshman from Chamblee was suspended for the first two games of the season as punishment for his July 26th arrest for DUI.

“Bellamy will help us,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said on Tuesday. “He had a good camp. And, for what it’s worth, he took his discipline like a man. He showed up every day at 5:30 in the morning and was on time and worked hard. We counsel these guys. Obviously he had the punitive damage of not being able to play a couple games and he was on the scout team most of that time. But even on the scout team he busted his tail trying to help the team win.”

Bellamy (6-foot-5, 240 pounds) was a backup to Jordan Jenkins at the “Jack” outside linebacker/defensive end position before being demoted to scout team as the result of his suspension. The majority of Bellamy’s repititions went to freshman Lorenzo Carter, who played well in his absence. But Tuesday’s depth chart, Carter was listed as the backup to Leonard Floyd at “Sam,” or strongside outside linebacker, and Bellamy is back to backing up Jenkins.

“I don’t think there’s much doubt that we want to get him in the game and we’re training him on some special teams, too,” Richt said. “I don’t know if he’ll start on any specials but he’s been getting some work as a second-teamer on some special teams in case he can help us there before it’s over, too.”

A two-game suspension, drug and alcohol counseling and community service are punitive disciplinary measures called for in UGA’s student-athlete handbook. Richt pointed to Bellamy’s situation as an example that Georgia’s system works.

“What happened, happened, and we were all sick about it,” Richt said. “But I think he grew and learned a lot from it. I think he really appreciates everything even more than he did before. So if there’s one young man that learned a lesson that will bless him down the road and bless our program then I’m glad. And I see that in Davin.”
