ATHENS — Georgia's football program has drawn attention in the ultra-competitive recruiting world recently for mailing hand-drawn portraits to top prospects. Each player's sketch includes a short message and autograph from coach Mark Richt, who seems happy with the reaction to the innovative pitch.
“The recruits enjoy it. It’s within the rules. And it’s getting a lot of attention, so I guess that is a good thing,” Richt said after practice Tuesday. “I didn’t know if anybody else in the country was doing it or not, but it seems like we’re one of the few that are doing it. It’s been a positive thing.”
The AJC’s Michael Carvell has reported that the tactic was the brainchild of UGA director of on-campus recruiting Daryl Jones and that the artwork is done by a student assistant/graphic design major in UGA’s recruiting office, Lisa Rader.
The drawings are designed to stand out in the piles of mail that top recruits receive from college football programs each week.
