Receiver, A-back spots open

With 15 returning starters and other spots seemingly spoken for (such as quarterback), there aren’t many position competitions in Georgia Tech’s preseason. One that appears wide open is at wide receiver, where a number of players will compete to start opposite Darren Waller, none of whom has a single career catch.

Corey Dennis entered preseason camp at the top of the depth chart, with redshirt freshmen Micheal Summers and Travin Henry behind him. Another to watch is DeAndre Smelter, perhaps the most intriguing player on the team. Smelter is joining the team after three years on the baseball team and before that had an illustrious high school football career. Whether it’s one of those four or incoming freshmen Ricky Jeune or Antonio Messick, Tech will rely on an inexperienced player to fill a key role in both the running and passing game. A rotation is likely.

The same is true at A-back, where Dennis Andrews, B.J. Bostic, Synjyn Days, Deon Hill, Charles Perkins and Tony Zenon will challenge for the starting spot alongside returning starter Robert Godhigh. All except Andrews have played and at times shined, but none has received significant time. It’s another linchpin position that often produces big plays through running, receiving and blocking. Perkins will have a hill to climb; he moved over to A-back from B-back in the spring.
