Mercedes-Benz Stadium will “absolutely be ready” for the college football opener Sept. 4 between Tennessee and Georgia Tech, wrote UT athletic director John Currie in a letter to fans Wednesday.

In the letter, Currie said he’s been asked frequently by fans about the status of the stadium, and of that anticipated matchup with the Yellow Jackets. He said that Peach Bowl CEO and president Gary Stokan has kept him updated on the stadium’s construction, and assured him the game will be played in the new facility.

The game will renew a rivalry that dates back to 1902 in a series Tennessee leads 24-17-2. The teams met nearly every year from 1946 until 1987, but haven’t played since. For its part, Georgia Tech is counting down the days until the series resumes.
