Florida State will host Notre Dame in football in the 2014 season, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced Friday.

Swofford informed FSU officials that the game was set for 2014 but a date has not been set. Notre Dame will remain a football and hockey independent but has made a deal to play five football games annually against ACC schools, beginning in 2014.

It’s not clear what other schools Notre Dame will play in the first year.

The Seminoles and Fighting Irish last played in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. FSU rallied for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Notre Dame 18-14.

But the teams have not had a regular-season matchup since 2003, when FSU routed Notre Dame 37-0 in South Bend, Ind.

FSU and Notre Dame have a storied past, including a “Game of the Century” in 1993 when the No. 2 Fighting Irish defeated No. 1 FSU 31-24 at South Bend, Ind. Despite the loss, FSU went on to win the national championship that season. The Seminoles have a 5-2 edge in the series.

Arranging a matchup in 2014 with Notre Dame gives FSU an impressive home schedule that also includes Florida and Clemson. The Seminoles would travel to Miami and also play Oklahoma State at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to open the 2014 season, a game in which FSU will earn a $3.5 million guarantee.

FSU has also booked a home-and-home contract with Boise State in 2019 and 2020.

Spring game Saturday: FSU will play its spring game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium. Coach Jimbo Fisher said that one side would feature the No. 1 offense and No. 2 defense, while another side would have the No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense. The game will not be televised.
