Huddle up: The Eagles return 16 starters and 40 lettermen, including WR Alex Amidon, who had 87 catches for 1,210 yards in 2012, and QB Chase Rettig, who threw for 3,065 yards and 17 TDs. … CB Al Louis-Jean has been suspended for the opener because of a violation of team rules. … New coach Steve Addazio was Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator at Florida. He has removed individual names from the back of the players’ jerseys.

Clemson (11-2, 7-1)

Huddle up: WR Sammy Watkins is looking to put last season behind him. Hindered by a two-game suspension and missing one game because of sickness, he caught 57 passes for 708 yards, after catching 82 passes for 1,209 yards and 12 TDs as a freshman in 2011. … RB Tyshon Dye (Elbert County) is out with a back injury. … Mark Richt is 11-0 against Clemson as an assistant at Florida State and coach at Georgia.

Duke (6-7, 3-5)

Huddle up: S Jeremy Cash, played five games for Ohio State two years ago and sat out last season after transferring to Duke, is listed as a starter. … The Blue Devils have 32 players who started at least one game in 2012. … LB Kelby Brown, who missed 2012 with an injury, has returned. He had 65 tackles in 2011. … Only about 3 miles separate the campuses of N.C. Central and Duke in Durham, N.C.

Florida State (12-2, 7-1)

Huddle up: Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston was named the Seminoles’ starting quarterback late last week by coach Jimbo Fisher. Wilson, who beat out sophomore Jacob Coker for the job, threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game. … WR Rashad Greene (Albany) is expected to play despite missing practices with a finger injury. … FSU’s receiving corps is missing TE Jeremy Kerr (knee), WR Jarred Haggins (ACL), TE Kevin Haplea (ACL), WR Willie Haulstead (academically ineligible) and WR Greg Dent (suspended).

Maryland (4-8, 2-6)

Miami (7-5, 5-3)

Huddle up: QB Stephen Morris won the skills competition at the Manning Passing Academy in July. He threw for 3,345 yards and 21 TDs in 2012. … Morris and TB Duke Johnson, who rushed for 947 yards, are among 19 returning starters. … Miami plays nine games in Florida, including its first five, which includes four home games and a trip to South Florida. … Freshman Walter Tucker “could play linebacker or fullback,” coach Al Golden told the Miami Herald.

North Carolina (8-4, 5-3)

Huddle up: QB Bryn Renner entered this season 2,922 yards from passing T.J. Yates (Pope) as the school’s all-time leading passer and 15 TD passes from moving past Darian Durant, who threw 68 career scoring passes. … Eric Ebron’s 645 yards receiving in 2012 was third-most all-time by an ACC tight end. Maryland’s Vernon Davis had 871 in 2005 and Virginia’s Heath Miller had 835 in 2003. … UNC must replace three starters from last season’s OL.

North Carolina State (7-6, 4-4)

Former Arkansas QB Brandon Mitchell, who transferred this summer, and Pete Thomas, who sat out last season after transferring from Colorado State, are the top candidates. … FB Logan Winkles (Upson-Lee), who started five games in 2012, is out for the season with a torn ACL. … LB D.J. Green (Westside-Macon) returns after missing 2012 because of an NCAA suspension for testing positive for a banned nutritional supplement.

Pittsburgh (6-7, 3-4 in Big East)

Huddle up: Starting QB Tom Savage will make his first start since Nov. 13, 2010. He started 15 games at Rutgers in 2009 and ’10, sat out one season after transferring to Arizona and then sat out last season after transferring to Pittsburgh. He threw for 2,732 yards and 16 TDs for Rutgers and beat out Chad Voytik for the starting job. … Pitt’s top player is DT Aaron Donald, who led the Big East with 18 1/2 tackles for loss last season.

Huddle up: QB David Watford is slated to see his first action since Nov. 26, 2011. He was redshirted in 2012, but both of last season’s QBs — Michael Rocco and Phillip Sims — transferred. Rocco is at Richmond and Sims, who transferred from Alabama to Virginia, is now at Winston-Salem State. It will be Watford’s first career start. … Greyson Lambert (Wayne County) is Watford’s backup.

He ranks third on the school’s career list for passing yards and total offense. … The Hokies have scored in 230 consecutive games, dating to Sept. 23, 1995. … Virginia Tech has blocked at least one kick every season since 1984. … Only four players on the Hokies’ roster scored at least one TD last season.
