On the eve of beginning the ACC portion of its basketball schedule, coach Brian Gregory and Georgia Tech got a heavy dose of bad news. Sophomore forward Robert Carter has torn meniscus in his left knee, Gregory announced Thursday, and will have surgery on Tuesday, the day the Yellow Jackets play at Duke. He is out indefinitely.

Carter was injured during Tech’s victory against Charlotte on Sunday. He was able to return to the game later in the second half and he thought he had just “tweaked” it. But Carter was still in discomfort at the team’s shootaround on Tuesday and underwent an MRI, which revealed the tear.

A timetable for his return was not given because the severity of his injury won’t be known until the operation is performed.

“Some guys are able to come back depending on how bad it is in three to six weeks,” Gregory said. “Some guys it’s three to six months.”

Carter is tied for the ACC lead in rebounding with 9.3 per game and was fourth on the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game.

His streak of 44 straight starts in his Tech career will end Saturday when the Yellow Jackets begin ACC play at Maryland.

“He’s a tough kid,” Gregory said. “And it hit pretty hard because he’s done a tremendous job for us this year. He has done everything that we’ve asked. He has changed his body. He’s more aggressive on the glass. I think his stats clearly show that he was having a tremendous sophomore season for us and is a big part of what we do both offensively and defensively.”
