Antoine Allen scored 21 points and Freddie Goldstein hit three free throws late in the game as visiting South Alabama upset No. 25 Florida State 76-71 as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic to open the season.
Goldstein had 11 points and five rebounds, Augustine Rubit scored 12 points, and Mychal Ammons contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Jaguars (1-0), who had 17 wins last season.
Montay Brandon and Terry Whisnant II each scored 11 points while Terrance Shannon and Michael Snaer added apiece 10 for the Seminoles (0-1), who won their first ACC Tournament championship last season and then lost to Cincinnati in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Miami 87, Stetson 79: Reggie Johnson scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Hurricanes held off the visiting Hatters in the season opener for both teams.
Kenny Kadji had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, which trailed by seven late in the first half, then wasted most of a 13-point second-half lead before hanging on in the final minutes. Trey McKinney Jones scored 14 points for UM.
Adam Pegg scored 22 points and Aaron Graham added 21 for Stetson, which shot 13-for-31 from 3-point range.
Stetson went 9-20 last season and hasn’t finished with a record better than .500 since 2000-01.
Miami has hopes of contending in the ACC despite losing an exhibition game to Division II St. Leo on Nov. 2.
Houston 81, FAMU 76: Leon Gibson had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the host Cougars beat the Rattlers in the season opener for both teams. Jamie Adams and Reggie Lewis scored 18 points each for FAMU, which led by one at the half.
St. Bonaventure 65, Bethune-Cookman 55: Demitrius Conger had 12 points and seven rebounds as the host Bonnies toppled the Wildcats in each team's season opener. Kevin Dukes scored 16 points and was 9-for-9 from the foul line for Bethune-Cookman.
