Georgia basketball player John Cannon has decided to leave the program and will seek to continue his college career elsewhere.
The junior center out of North Carolina has played only sparingly his three years in Athens. This season, Cannon averaged about four minutes per game, appearing in 18 of the Bulldogs’ 30 games. He averaged 1.4 points and 1.1 rebounds per game and blocked five shots. A native of Burnsville, N.C., Cannon got two starts and averaged 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 2013. He career-high 10 points and seven rebounds against Southern Cal that season.
“I have decided to transfer from the University of Georgia Basketball program to consider other opportunities to play basketball and get my degree,” Cannon said in a statement from UGA. “I want to thank Georgia for the opportunity and support, especially my teammates who mean the world to me. The timing for wanting my transfer allows me to get a head start on looking at the options that may be available. I want to wish everyone at Georgia the best, and I’m excited about the possibilities ahead.”
Georgia opens play in the SEC tournament Friday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. The Bulldogs (18-12, 10-6 SEC) earned a bye for the first two rounds of play.
“I’d like to wish John the best as he continues his career,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said. “I certainly understand his desire for more opportunities for playing time elsewhere. We appreciate his contributions to the program over the past three years.”
