Hunter Gordon and Jesse Adams combined for a three-hit shutout to lift Boston College to its first ACC win of the season, a 1-0 victory Friday over the University of Miami in the opener of a three-game series in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The Eagles (7-34, 1-20 ACC) scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the third inning when Hurricanes second baseman Alex Hernandez made an errant throw while attempting to complete an inning-ending double play.
The loss, which ended Miami’s three-game winning streak, spoiled a gem by starter Chris Diaz (3-4). The sophomore left-hander allowed four hits and the unearned while pitching all eight innings. He matched a career high with seven strikeouts and walked one.
The Hurricanes (28-17, 10-12) had runners in scoring position in two of the first three innings — including a two-on, one-out situation in the third — but were unable to score.
UM looked like it might finally break through in the eighth, with pinch-runner John Lawroski at third base and Brandon Lopez at second after a double steal. But a groundout from pinch-hitter Christopher Barr and a lineout from Tyler Palmer ended the threat.
Brad Fieger went 2-for-2 with a walk for Miami, which was shut out for the second time this season.
Gordon (1-4), a senior right-hander, and Adams, a freshman left-hander, combined for BC’s second shutout of the season. Gordon earned his first win this season, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing three hits and four walks while striking out two.
Adams picked up his first college save, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings without giving up a hit, walking one and striking out two — both in the ninth.
The second game of the series is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today.
No. 10 Florida State 7, Wake Forest 3: Luke Weaver allowed three hits in seven shutout innings and Marcus Davis was 2-for-3 with three RBIs as the host Seminoles (33-9, 14-8 ACC) defeated the Demon Deacons (24-21, 7-15). Weaver (5-1) struck out nine and walked three as FSU won its second straight.
