Time Magazine listed Colin Kaepernick as one of 10 finalists for “Person of the Year” on Monday.
The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback began taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem in protest of police brutality and social injustice in 2016.
Since he opted out of his contract with the 49ers in March, Kaepernick has not signed with another NFL team, inciting protests from some NFL fans and players.
In the 2016 season and beginning of the 2017 season, a few players knelt in protest during the playnig of the national anthem, but it wasn’t until late-September when President Donald Trump voiced his opinion that NFL owners should fire “sons of bitches” who take a knee protesting police brutality and social injustices.
Trump’s comment sparked outrage among NFL players and some coaches who responded by kneeling or locking arms in solidarity with protesting players during Sept. 25 games.
The 2017 Time Person of the Year will be revealed on Wednesday.
