Aron Hyde has left Atlanta United to again become goalkeeper coach for the U.S. men’s national team.
An Atlanta United spokesman said the club’s search to replace Hyde is underway. The spokesman declined to say how many years remained on Hyde’s contract, but he was still under contract.
Hyde joined Atlanta United for its inaugural season in 2017, working with Brad Guzan and Alec Kann among others for the next three years.
Under Hyde’s coaching, Guzan posted a shutout streaks of 541 minutes in 2017, the sixth-longest streak in MLS history, and 521, which was the longest in the league in 2019. Guzan also tied for the league lead in shutouts (14) and wins (18) in 2019.
Hyde worked with U.S. Soccer before he joined Atlanta United. His past experiences include time with the Chicago Fire, University of Washington, Emerald City FC, Walsall, Millwall and Wycombe.
A native of Birmingham, England, Hyde’s work with the goalkeepers was always entertaining because he was constantly engaged with Guzan, Kann, Brendan Moore and others.
Atlanta United supporters may know Hyde as the coach who fielded questions during most of the on-the-field halftime interviews during television broadcasts of games.
Last season there was a reported argument on the sideline between Hyde and manager Frank de Boer that resulted in Hyde not sitting on the bench with the rest of the players and coaches for the remainder of the team’s games.
The U.S. men’s national team will report to camp Jan. 5 in Doha, Qatar. The team will play Costa Rica in Carson, Calif., on Feb. 1.
“Aron brings a tremendous amount of experience and a knowledge of both the domestic and international landscape," U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said in a statement. "He will be a great addition to the senior team staff while also serving as a connector to the rest of our programs."
