The office of Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed issued a statement through a spokesperson Thursday on the pending sale of the Atlanta Hawks.
The Hawks reached an definitive sales agreement with a group led by Tony Ressler to purchase the franchise and Philips Arena on Wednesday. The franchise has been available since September.
“Upon learning of the discriminatory and offensive remarks made by Atlanta Hawks controlling owner Bruce Levenson, the city was clear and deliberate in denouncing and repudiating them. Since then, the city has supported the NBA’s efforts to find new ownership and we believe all of the teams interested in purchasing the Atlanta Hawks are high-quality business people who can lead the team ably and in a manner that is consistent with our city’s core values. As we’ve said from the beginning of this process, we look forward to the closing of the sale of the team in the summer and celebrating them as the Eastern Conference and NBA Champions.”
