The NBA issued a lengthy report that found 14 incorrect calls in the final minutes of regulation and four overtimes of the Hawks’ 142-139 victory over the Knicks Sunday.
Eight of the calls went against the Knicks and six went against the Hawks.
Here are the details:
* The Knicks’ Joakim Noah should have been called for an offensive foul while setting a screen on the Hawks’ Dennis Schroder with 1:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Hawks led 101-99 and Justin Holiday hit a 3-pointer eight seconds later that gave the Knicks a one-point lead. According to the report: “Noah (NYK) sets the screen on Schroder (ATL) and does not give him room to avoid the contact.”
* The Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony should have been called for a loose ball foul in going for a rebound against the Hawks’ Dwight Howard with 54.8 seconds left in regulation. The Hawks led 103-102 at the time when the Hawks’ Paul Millsap missed a floating jump shot and then would get the rebound. Howard would score on an alley-oop dunk on an assist from Schroder on the possession with 45.2 seconds left. According to the report: “Anthony (NYK) dislodges Howard (ATL) affecting his ability to retrieve the rebound.”
* On the same play, enhanced video showed that Schroder should have been called for traveling. According to the report: “Schroder (ATL) moves his pivot.”
* Schroder should have been called for a loose ball foul on Noah going for a rebound with 30.2 seconds left in regulation. The Hawks led 103-102 at the time and Anthony missed a pull-up jumper. According to the report: “Schroder (ATL) clamps the arm of Noah (NYK) and affects his ability to retrieve the rebound.”
* Millsap should have been called for a shooting foul on Anthony with 3.5 seconds left in regulation (video above). Anthony made the basket with 2.2 remaining to tie the game at 104-104 and force overtime. According to the report: “Millsap (ATL) makes contact to the body of Anthony (NYK) that affects his SQBR (speed, quickness, balance, rhythm) on the driving shot attempt.”
* Howard should have been called for defensive three seconds with 1:14 left in the first overtime. The Knicks led 111-108 at the time of the non-called infraction. Anthony missed a 3-point attempt 10 seconds later that was rebounded by Howard. According to the report: “Howard (ATL) is in the paint without actively guarding an opponent for longer than three seconds.”
* Noah fouled Howard with 53.6 seconds remaining in the first overtime but the infraction came before Howard began an alley-oop layup on a pass from Tim Hardaway Jr. The basket cut the Hawks deficit to 111-110. Howard missed the and-one free throw and it was rebounded by the Hawks. According to the report: “Noah (NYK) makes contact with Howard’s (ATL) arm that affects his SQBR, but the foul is prior to Howard gaining possession of the ball and entering his shooting motion.”
* Anthony should have been called for traveling with 35.2 seconds remaining in the first overtime. Anthony missed a fade-away jump shot 3.3 seconds later with the game tied 111-111. According to the report: “Anthony (NYK) switches pivot feet on the perimeter.”
* Anthony should have been called for traveling with 37 seconds left in double overtime. Anthony missed a 3-pointer 3.1 seconds later with the Hawks leading 121-120. According to the report via enhanced video: “Anthony (NYK) moves his pivot foot.”
* Anthony should not have been called for a foul on Schroder with 12.9 seconds left in the second overtime. It was Anthony’s sixth foul of the game and sent him to the bench for the remainder of the contest. Schroder’s basket gave the Hawks a 123-120 lead. Schroder missed the and-one free throw. According to the report: “Anthony (NYK) makes marginal contact with Schroder (ATL) that does not affect his drive to the basket and shot attempt.”
* Holiday should have been called for a shooting foul against Schroder with 4.4 seconds left in triple overtime. Schroder scored on the drive to the basket that tied the game at 130-130. According to the report: “Holiday (NYK) makes contact with Schroder’s (ATL) body that affects his drive to the basket and shot attempt.”
* The Hawks’ Malcolm Delaney should have been called for a shooting foul against the Knicks’ Brandon Jennings with 1:26 left in the fourth overtime. Jennings missed the floating jump shot and the Hawks rebounded. The Knicks led 139-138. According to the report: “Delaney (ATL) makes contact with Jennings’ (NYK) body that affects his drive to the basket and shot attempt.”
* The Knicks’ Mindaugas Kuzminskas should have been called for a loose ball foul against the Hawks’ Mike Muscala with 10.2 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime. The infraction occurred after Schroder missed the second of two free throws with the Hawks leading 142-139. According to the report: “Kuzminskas (NYK) faces up with Muscala (ATL) and affects his ability to retrieve the rebound.”
* Muscala should have been called for a loose ball foul against Willy Hernangomez with 5.4 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime. The infraction occurred before the Knicks’ Courtney Lee took the first of two failed 3-point attempts on the game’s final possession.
The report also found a total of 17 correct calls and 22 correct non-calls.
