The Hawks announced the signing of Austin Daye to a 10-day contract Sunday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the team’s intention to sign Daye Saturday. His contract will expire on March 25.

Daye, a five-year NBA veteran, appeared in 26 games, including four starts, this season with the Spurs and averaged 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 10.3 minutes. The Hawks signed the forward out of the NBA Development League, where he played for Erie. In 10 games he averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 blocks in 28.5 minutes. Daye, a former first-round pick of the Pistons, also played for the Grizzlies and Raptors.

“I’m coming to a great team and a great organization,” Daye said. “I wasn’t expecting to come here. When my agent called and told me I was excited to come to a team that is No. 1 in the East, especially with Coach (Mike Budenholzer) who was with San Antonio before. Some of the things are kind of similar and makes it easier on myself.”

Daye will wear No. 3 and will be with the team in Los Angeles for tonight’s game against the Lakers.

The Hawks needed the addition with the loss of forward Mike Scott to a broken toe. Budenholzer said it’s fair to say Daye will plays a similar style as Scott.

“Austin had some real good moments in San Antonio,” Budenholzer said. “It is someone who can spread the court as a 4-man and has a high basketball I.Q. and can pass. He has a lot of things that fit us. …

“His ability to spread the court and make plays off the dribble. He is a highly-skilled guy and we think of Mike as being that way.”
