The Hawks intend to sign forward Jarell Eddie to a 10-day contract, according to a person familiar with the situation. The official transaction will likely be completed Thursday.

Eddie, who played for the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League, was in training camp with the Hawks this season. He played for the Wizards in the 2014 Las Vegas Summer League.

The 6-foot-7 forward out of Virginia Tech played 37 games for Austin and averaged 11.9 points and 3.0 rebounds. He shot .422 (97 of 230) from 3-point range. He won the D-League 3-Point contest at All-Star weekend last month.

Eddie played in Austin’s win over Fort Wayne Tuesday night with six points and two rebounds in 24 minutes.

The Hawks have an open roster spot after trading first-round pick Adreian Payne to the Timberwolves last month.

In the short-term, Eddie would give the Hawks another option to help manage the minutes of current players on the roster for the stretch run of the regular season. Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer has said of several occasions his big-picture goal is to have players as healthy as possible heading into the postseason. As an example, the Hawks sat three starters in a win over the Heat on Saturday. The Hawks also sat starters in back-to-back road wins against the 76ers and Celtics in January.

Austin plays a system with similar terminology as the Hawks.
