The Hawks continued to use the NBA Development League to get playing time for young players with the assignment of Edy Tavares on Wednesday. The rookie center will play for the Austin, via the flexible assignment rule, tonight in a game against the Santa Cruz. Tim Hardaway Jr. is also currently on assignment with Austin.
Tavares played in the Hawks’ 121-115 win over the Rockets Tuesday night. In his fifth appearance of the season, Tavares had six points and six rebounds, both career-highs. Before Tuesday, Tavares had played a total of 12 minutes with his last appearance on Dec. 12.
“I thought Edy (Tavares) helped us,” Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said after Tuesday’s game. “Ten minutes, I thought he was really good. He made a few plays, rebounded and he made a couple plays he’ll learn from and he’ll be better the next time he plays. It was great to see Edy get in a game.”
It will be the fourth D-League stint for Tavares, who has played six games for Austin and Canton. He has averaged 10.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks.
The Hawks don’t play again until Sunday, when the start a road-home back-to-back with the Knicks. Austin also has a game against Reno on Saturday.
Executives with the Hawks are expected to be in Austin tonight to watch Hardaway and Tavares.
