Elton Brand will take several weeks off before deciding if a 17th NBA season is in his future.
The elder statesman of the Hawks is an unrestricted free agent following the expiration of his second one-year contract with the Hawks. The 35-year old said some time away will let him know if another year - in Atlanta or somewhere else - is what he wants to do.
“I’ll see if I another year of trying to get prepared and what it takes to be on an NBA rostere,” Brand said Thursday during exit interviews following the end of the season. “There is a lot of work you have to put in. … After two or three weeks, I’ll know. See if I have that itch. This team I might not and just lay back on the couch. We’ll see.”
Brand said if his time is up that Atlanta was “the greatest place to end it.”
As players left the arena for the final time this season, they carried a red T-shirt given to them by the coaching staff. On the front of the shirt were words from Brand - That’s What We Work(ed) On.
“As you can see it’s a registered trademark that says EB,” Brand said holding up his shirt. “That is a quote I used to say on the bench. Mike Muscala hits a 3 - that’s what we worked on. Paul Millsap with a face up - that’s what we worked on. We put a lot of work in and I used to scream that talking trash to the other team from the bench.”
