The Hawks announced the signing of Walter “Edy” Tavares on Thursday, completing the agreement reached last week during the NBA moratorium period. The contract is a multi-year deal, terms not disclosed, and Tavares will come to training camp with the Hawks.
Tavares, a 7-foot-3 center, was a second-round pick (No. 43 overall) of the Hawks last year. He spent last season playing for Gran Canaria in Spain’s ACB League.
“We followed Edy closely the past two seasons with Gran Canaria and are excited to officially have Edy as a member of our team,” Hawks president of basketball operations and head coach Mike Budenholzer said in a statement. “We would like to thank the coaches and executives of Gran Canaria as they played a significant role in Edy’s development and we look forward to continuing his improvement in our player development program.”
The 23-year-old Tavares will play for the Hawks entry in the Las Vegas Summer League, which begins play Friday. He averaged 8.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 22.1 minutes in 57 games last season in the ACB League and Eurocup.
