Top Braves minor league pitchers
They are not as close to majors-ready as Mike Minor, but the Braves covet three young right-handers who are tearing up Single-A: Julio Teheran, Arodys Vizcaino and Randall Delgado, all three of whom are pitching for Myrtle Beach in the Carolina League.
“All three of them have been really dynamic,” Braves director of player development Kurt Kemp said. “We couldn’t be any more pleased with their progress.”
Kemp said all three have fastballs in the 93-94 mph range and, as they mature, will be able to hold that velocity throughout games. All have three quality pitches, Kemp said, and the next step, especially for the younger two, is to gain confidence their change-ups.
Here’s how the Braves newest “Big Three” stack up, with thoughts from Kemp:
Julio Teheran
Age:19
Ht: 6-2
Wt: 150
Obtained: Signed by Braves at age 16 from Colombia
Stats: 2-2 with a 1.14 ERA in seven starts for Rome; 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA in five starts since promotion to Myrtle Beach. Struck out 12 batters in first start for Pelicans and 14 in his third start.
Comment: "His stuff is going to hold up at whatever league he pitches in. It's commanding his stuff within the strike zone, just like it is for Arodys and, really, like it is for Randall as well. Those three young arms, it's about throwing strikes and commanding their stuff within the strike zone."
Arodys Vizcaino
Age: 19
Ht: 6-0
Wt: 190
Obtained: Acquired from Yankees in Javier Vazquez trade in December. Signed by Yankees at age 16 from the Dominican Republic
Stats: Just promoted to Myrtle after going 9-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 12 starts in Rome. Didn't walk a batter in last six starts in Rome (38 1/3 innings), while allowing only one unearned run in last five starts (33 2/3 innings).
Comment: "His first few starts in Rome were OK, but they were nothing outstanding and then he really turned a corner there. ... [He was] getting his feet on the ground in our organization and a new league, but, boy, once he put it all together, he ran off a string of very, very good outings and earned that promotion to Myrtle Beach."
Randall Delgado
Age: 20
Ht: 6-3
Wt: 165
Obtained: Signed by Braves at age 16 from Panama
Stats: 2-5 with 2.42 ERA in 13 starts for Myrtle Beach. Leads Carolina League with 87 strikeouts and has walked only 17 in 78 innings. Leads Carolina League in innings and is second in ERA.
Comment: "Randall has been consistent all year long in Myrtle Beach. He's been in a higher league from the get-go and has still put up a very good ERA. His numbers, his control, all those things would lead you believe he's done a good job all the way through the first couple of months of the season."
