The Braves scratched right-hander Mike Foltynewicz from his scheduled Friday start because of elbow soreness that he felt during his first start last weekend.

Foltynewicz endured through the soreness for parts of last year, and if this were the regular season, he wouldn’t miss the start, manager Brian Snitker said.

He’ll be evaluated by Dr. Gary Lourie on Saturday. The team will determine his status from there.

The Braves wanted to err on the cautious side with their probable opening-day starter. Foltynewicz is coming off a breakout season in which he earned All-Star honors and started Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
