Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez wasn’t surprised when Chipper Jones wanted to get back in the game.
“There was no question in my mind that he would be back in that uniform,” Gonzalez said of Jones on Saturday during FanFest at Turner Field. “He’s a lifer. He’s a guy that loves baseball, loves to be part of it.”
Jones, an eight-time All-Star, retired after the 2012 season. He spent time away from the game to decompress, before being hired by the Braves in December as a special assistant to baseball operations.
Gonzalez doesn’t expect Jones at spring training until early March, but is looking forward to his arrival and future contributions to the organization.
“He’s going to experience a couple different things, not only be on the field, maybe some scouting and some other stuff,” Gonzalez said. “Knowing him, he’ll be on the field, he’ll be in those cages.”
