Braves quotes after Friday’s win against the Diamondbacks
Braves quotes from Julio Teheran, Cameron Maybin, David Aardsma and Fredi Gonzalez after Friday’s win against the Diamondbacks.
**CAMERON MAYBIN
On making a great catch and coming up with a couple of big hits including two-out RBI triple
“That’s part of my game – I take a lot of pride on the defensive end, as much as I do in the box. We were able to come up with some big two-out knocks. Any time you can score runs with two outs, it’s always huge. Julio did another great job of going out there and giving us a chance to be in the game. That’s all you can really ask for.”
On living up the nickname “Spiderman”
“Yeah, I guess when somebody gives it to you, you’ve got to try to do what you can out there. Thanks to Dick Enberg, I’ve got to go hard out there.”
On Aardsma pitching two important innings
“I feel like ever since he’s been here, he does what they ask him to do. Great clubhouse guy, great competitior, and another great job of him going out, making his pitches to get ahead, and again, giving us a chance to be in the ballgame and have a chance to close it out at the end.”
On ranking among NL leaders in average with RISP this season (.388)
“Sometimes you get lucky, but again, I think it’s coming with the consistent quality at-bats, just continuing to put together quality at-bats and being a tough out. And when you’re a tough out and you can put together quality at-bats, good things happen.”
**JULIO TEHERAN
On keys for him tonight
“Just trying to do the same things I’ve been doing my last few starts. I’ve been feeling a little better on the left side of the rubber. Trying to do my thing there, trying to pitch inside, trying to use all my pitches, and that’s what I was able to do today.”
On getting run support and defensive support
“Oh, yes, it’s nice when you go out there and get the support, the run support. That’s when you feel you need to go out there and do your part, and that’s what I was able to do.”
What was working best for you?
“All my pitches were working. I used my curveball more today, and my slider. I felt good. That’s the most important thing.”
On working with Pierzynski
“The first couple of starts of the season I didn’t feel (like they were on the same page). But we’ve been getting on the same page now, and when he seems I’m going down he tries to get on me, and that’s a good thing you want from the catcher.”
“I’ve been working very hard. I feel like now I’m where I want to be, just keep working and being consistent.”
**FREDI GONZALEZ
On Teheran’s performance and the win
“I thought he had command of all his pitches. What did he punch out, seven? The slider was really, really good. He threw in, kept some of those right-handed hitters off his slider. He did a nice job.
“We played some kind of defense today, boys. Maybin, and even that play in the ninth inning that Peterson made; that’s not an easy play on both ends, for him to catch it and throw it and then for Terdo, that close, to be able to catch it. We did a nice job playing defense, and we got just enough runs and held them.”
On bullpen
“I tell you what, the unsung hero today? Aardsma. Giving us two innings and facing those right-handed hitters. That’s not what he gets paid for, to go two innings. But we felt like we had a chance to win the ballgame and he gave us the best opportunity, and he did it.”
On the two-out RBI triples from couple of guys who’ve done it all year, Peterson and Maybin
“Petey gets those RBIs. You hit him first, you hit him sixth, you hit him anywhere in the lineup, he’s a guy who sniffs those RBIs. And Maybin’s been swinging the bat well. But again, I thought we made some great plays defensively and it was nice to get a win.”
On Terdoslavich
“He’s a guy that always stays ready. We moved him up and down a couple of times, and it’s a shame that he missed the first 2 ½ months of the season with the wrist injury. But he’s a guy who’s a nice piece to have in the National League game. He can play first base, you can run him in the outfield, get him some good at-bats off the bench.”
On Vizcaino as closer, seems to have taken to it
“Knock on wood, I don’t even know if he knows what he’s doing as far as that role. We just gave him the opportunity. He gives us the best chance, he might be the only guy – well, now with (Edwin) Jackson in the bullpen – he’s one of the only guys down there who has swing and miss stuff, 98-99 mile an hour fastball. I’m happy and pleased, and I think our minor league people have done a terrific job with him, throwing balls over the plate.”
**DAVID AARDSMA
On Fredi saying you were the unsung hero tonight
“It’s a good feeling to go out there and get the outs. Obviously some great plays – Markakis going in the corner, Cam making two great catches; obviously the one was huge. And Simmons making that great play in the hole. You’ve got to give them the credit. I just was throwing the ball.”
On confidence they showed leaving you in after you’ve recorded five outs, and they have a run in and one on after consecutive 2-out hits in the eighth
“I was frustrated giving up those two hits. I was cruising pretty well, then those two hits kind of caught me right out of the gate. But it was great, I can’t be happier to get a chance, an opportunity. But again, you’ve got to give those (defenders) credit for really bailing me out and stepping up.”
On Maybin’s diving catch
“I had no doubt that he was going to catch it. He’s done that all year, all season long. I don’t think he gets enough credit nationally for what he’s done. He looked like he had a bead on it from the second it was off the bat. And that picked us all up up and gave us the confidence to keep going.”
