For the second time on Monday night, the Braves scooped up a piece from the Dodgers bullpen.
Atlanta acquired right-hander Josh Ravin from the Dodgers for cash considerations, bringing its roster to the 40-man limit. Eligible players needed to be added to the 40-man roster or they could be subject to the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 14.
The Braves added former Dodger Grant Dayton off waivers earlier in the evening. He pitched 23-2/3 innings in 2017, allowing 13 runs, after a promising rookie season with 39 strikes and six walks over 26-1/3 innings.
Dayton, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery in August and likely won’t contribute in 2018. He’s under team control through 2022, making him more of a long-term acquisition.
Ravin, however, could. The 29-year-old pitched in 14 games last season, striking out 19 in 16-2/3 innings. He’s thrown 35-2/3 innings across three seasons with the Dodgers.
The Braves also added left-handers Adam McCreery and Ricardo Sanchez to the 40-man. The 25-year-old McCreery was acquired for Jhoulys Chacin in 2016, and posted a 2.74 ERA in 62-1/3 innings in Class-A Rome and Florida.
Sanchez, 21, posted a 4.95 ERA across 100 innings in Florida.
The Braves elected not to protect outfielder Dustin Peterson and infielder Travis Demeritte, both of whom were once considered valued prospects.
Peterson was limited to 87 games with Triple-A Gwinnett last season, slashing .248/.318/.318 with one homer and 30 RBIs. Demeritte hit .231 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs in 458 at-bats in Double-A Mississippi.
Dayton and Ravin were under new Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos in Los Angeles. The Dodgers were known for reclamation projects, especially in the bullpen, so Anthopoulos will try to re-discover some of that success in Atlanta.
