Two of Auburn University’s greatest athletes -- Bo Jackson and Charles Barkley -- celebrated after their alma mater’s men’s basketball team punched a ticket to the Final Four on Sunday.
Auburn defeated Kentucky 77-71 in overtime to win the Midwest Regional title on Sunday, sending the Tigers to their first Final Four berth this weekend in Minneapolis. In getting to the Final Four, Auburn defeated the Wildcats, North Carolina and Kansas in consecutive games.
Auburn became the first college basketball team to defeat Kansas and North Carolina in consecutive games, AL.com reported.
Jackson, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1985 as the nation’s top college football player, went on Twitter to exult.
"To all the naysayers … how does that cheap shoe leather you got stuck in your throat taste?" Jackson tweeted.
Barkley, an All-American center on Auburn’s basketball team from 1981 to 1984, clapped his hands and appeared to shed a tear on the NCAA Tournament wrapup show after the Tigers locked up the victory.
“C’mon, man, let it out. He’s crying over here,” CBS analyst Kenny Smith said.
Barkley had a good reason to shed a tear.
Auburn will face Virginia in the Final Four on Saturday night.
