My choice for Atlanta United’s man of the match is Josef Martinez following Wednesday’s 7-0 win against New England at Mercedes-Benz Stadium:

JOSEF MARTINEZ

Striker

Why? He scored three goals in the first half for his second hat-trick this season. He scored his 11th goal in the second minute, his 12th in the 30th minute on a penalty kick and  his 13th with another penalty kick in the 39th minute.

He said the only time he’s scored a hat-trick in the first half came on PlayStation with Real Madrid.

Martinez said he’s not thinking about trying to chase down the leaders and win the Golden Boot, given to the league’s top scorer. NYCFC’s David Villa leads with 19 goals.

“I think we are doing things well,” Martinez said. “Obviously things got a little complicated with them going down two players, but I think we are playing really well at home. We are making it hard for teams to play  here. We need to continue on this path and do important things.”
