The Hawks are signing Jahlil Okafor to a non-guaranteed contract, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Okafor, the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NBA draft, played in 27 games for the Pistons last season, averaging 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 12.9 minutes per game. With Onyeka Okongwu out injured for a while, Okafor could add some depth at center, if added to the 15-man roster. The Athletic first reported the deal. Okafor was waived by the Nets on Sept. 9.

Heading into training camp, which begins Sept. 28, the Hawks also signed Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to a one-year, non-guaranteed deal. Luwawu-Cabarrot spent the past two seasons with Brooklyn, shooting 38.8% from 3-point range for the 2019 season, but only 31.4% for the 2020 season. Although the Hawks’ wing rotation is crowded, he brings defense, and he scored 6.4 points in 18.1 minutes per game last season.

NBA teams can carry up to 20 players entering training camp, though that must be whittled down to 15 for the regular season (with two two-way players permitted, on top of that).
