FLOWERY BRANCH -- The Falcons secondary, which gave up 291 yards passing and four touchdowns, will be on the hot seat Sunday against the Panthers (1 p.m., Mercedes-Benz Stadium) and struggling quarterback Sam Darnold, who’s tossed seven interceptions during their four-game losing streak.
The Falcons finished Sunday’s game against the Dolphins without their starting cornerbacks, as A.J. Terrell was pulled off the field by the independent doctor to be observed for a concussion, and Fabian Moreau, for the second game in a row, had a neck injury.
With the Falcons playing backups at cornerback, Miami put together two fourth-quarter drives and took a 28-27 lead, but left too much time for Matt Ryan, Kyle Pitts and Younghoe Koo.
Cornerback T.J. Green, who had to play 13 snaps (18%) against the Dolphins, was released Monday. He played well earlier in the season and helped the Falcons beat the Giants.
“I’m very appreciative of it,” Falcons coach Arthur Smith said. “He could be back. He could be back tomorrow; he could be back in the future, and we’ll see.”
Terrell was limited in practice with a concussion earlier in the week. It was his second concussion of the season, and this could be a good game to let him rest and fully recover.
Nickel back Avery Williams (hamstring) fully practiced this week and will return after missing two games. He is Terrell’s backup and an upgrade over Green.
Also, safety Erik Harris (shoulder) returned to practice and will be available.
The Falcons were worried about their cornerback depth and signed Luther Kirk from Minnesota’s practice squad. They also have cornerback Chris Williamson on the practice squad.
