International bragging rights and a cash prize are at stake in this year’s The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race, under a new team-competition format.

Four international teams, including a USA squad, will compete for the inaugural Peachtree Cup and $42,000 on July 4. Each team will have six runners, three males and three females, and the team with the best cumulative time wins. All six individual times are added together to create the cumulative team time.

Along with Team USA, there’ll be Team Africa, Team Europe and Team Asia. The U.S. team is captained by Shalane Flanagan, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, and features Christo Landry, last year’s Peachtree Road Race winner and runner-up on the men’s side, and Rachel Ward, last year’s third-place finisher, on the women’s side.

Also on Team USA are Bobby Curtis, Tyler Pennel and Janet Bawcom.

The 2010 New York City Marathon winter, Gebre Gebremariam, leads Africa, which has three former Peachtree Road Race winners. Daniele Meucci headlines Europe; Meucci is the 2014 European champion in the marathon. All six runners on Asia’s team are from Japan.

Along with the first-place cash prize, another $39,000 will be awarded in the team competition.
