What you can buy instead of a dozen eggs

As egg prices triple nationwide, here’s what savvy shoppers can buy instead
Jan 29, 2025

Can I offer you a nice egg in this tryin’ time?” Probably not.

Once a household staple, eggs have become a luxury in recent months. Since summer 2023, their prices have tripled. What used to cost $2.05 per dozen now averages $6.30 nationwide, according to Earnest Analytics. And in California, prices are near $9 per dozen.

Why the sticker shock?

A massive bird flu outbreak has forced farmers to slaughter millions of chickens monthly while increased biosecurity measures and testing protocols drive costs even higher, The Associated Press reported. The situation is further strained by heightened seasonal demand, leading many stores to implement purchase limits on eggs. But there’s hope: The USDA predicts egg prices could drop to around $2.50 per dozen by April 2025.

While the poultry industry focuses on safety, many are reconsidering how to spend our hard-earned money. If $6.30 for a dozen eggs feels excessive, there are many practical and enjoyable alternatives for your budget.
