Nurse.org has announced the winners in six nursing categories of its annual Icon Awards. Earning the most votes and being named icon of the year was Jonathan V. Llamas, a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Pasadena, California.
“Jonathan is truly an inspiration not only to me but also to the nursing profession and the communities he serves and has continued to put the needs of his patients before his own,” the person who nominated Llamas wrote.
“As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Leader, Jonathan uses his platform to educate, inspire, and advocate the importance of mental health care by stressing the importance of collaboration, mutual trust, and cultural inclusivity with his patients,” the nomination continued. “In addition to being a provider, his leadership roles include being the West Coast University Alumni Chapter President where he helps empower future nurses to realize their full potential and is also an influential activist in not only supporting but also promoting mental health initiatives within nursing and the healthcare sector.”
Llamas was also voted nurse leader of the year, which propelled him into the running for icon of the year.
“This award is not really about me but about everyone else who came before who helped pave the way to allow me to become the person I am today,” Llamas wrote in an Instagram post.
The winners in the other five categories were:
- Most inspirational nurse: Brandy Pinkerton
- Nurse creator of the year: Kathleen Green
- Nurse innovator of the year: Spencer Jones
- New nurse go-getter: Kristine (only one name given)
- Nursing student to watch: Alexis Heal
All the winners — including community awards, products, education and careers — can be found on the Nurse.org website.
