With a 15-degree temperature drop in Wednesday’s forecast, it will feel like North Georgia turned back the calendar page.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said a projected high of 61 degrees is more like March weather than mid-April. A gusty breeze blowing in with a cold front should make it feel even cooler, he said.

All of North Georgia is under a wind advisory beginning at 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The advisory is set to expire at 10 p.m. Monahan said it will be “two hands on the steering wheel kind of wind.”

Despite the cold front, he said rain is not likely Wednesday aside from a sprinkle or two near the Tennessee border. Temperatures are expected to fall even further on the other side of the front, with a morning low of 38 degrees in Thursday’s forecast for metro Atlanta.

In the mountains, freeze warnings are scheduled to go into effect from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. Thursday.

Rain returns on Saturday, Monahan said.

“I want you to be ready for what is going to be a wet, a soggy start to the weekend,” he said. “Today, tomorrow and Friday should be pretty dry across North Georgia. But Saturday, that’s the day for your inside plans.”

Monahan expects 2 inches or more of rainfall on Saturday as widespread rain soaks North Georgia. There will be the possibility of storms embedded in the downpours, he said.

It all clears out on Sunday as sunshine helps temperatures rebound to the 70s, according to the latest forecast.

While there are no major delays inside the Perimeter on Wednesday morning, those headed north of the city should avoid I-85. A crash in Jackson County has shut down the northbound lanes just south of U.S. 129 and there are “massive delays,” according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The crash was causing 152 minutes of backups at 6:30 a.m., the Traffic Center reported. Traffic reporter Mark Arum said those who normally take I-85 through Braselton should use Ga. 124 to Ga. 11 to get to the Jefferson Bypass.
