UGA to eliminate nearly 130 jobs

Documents released by University of Georgia administrators to state officials indicate that the school plans to eliminate nearly 130 jobs.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that the move aims to meet Gov. Nathan Deal’s directive to cut state budgets by 3 percent this year and next.

University President Michael Adams said the cuts add up to about $11 million. About 70 of the cut jobs will come from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

According to the documents, not all the eliminated jobs will mean layoffs. Many are either vacant or being filled temporarily by rehired retirees.

But the overall plan also calls for the elimination of dozens of jobs now filled by full-time workers and cuts to some future hiring initiatives.
