Tropical Storm Nicholas was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane after making landfall Tuesday morning along the Texas coast. It could bring rain to North Georgia by Wednesday afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News.

A slight chance of rain in the forecast Tuesday is only a taste of what’s to come later in the week with the arrival of Tropical Storm Nicholas.

The storm, which made landfall along the Texas coast Tuesday morning as a Category 1 hurricane, is expected to bring showers to Georgia as early as Wednesday afternoon. On Tuesday, rain chances are limited at 20%, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

“It’s been pretty quiet the past few days, but we are starting to see things get more active for us,” he said. “Dry for us this morning, but to the west we’re watching what was Hurricane Nicholas dump inches of rain on the Texas and Louisiana coasts.”

The same areas were inundated with rain when Hurricane Ida blew through a few weeks ago. With 14 named storms so far this hurricane season, Monahan said 2021 is well above average but still below the pace of last year’s record season.

Following Hurricane Ida’s destructive path, Channel 2 is partnering with law enforcement agencies, the trucking industry and the nonprofit organization Caring for Others to gather and deliver supplies to those impacted by the storm in Louisiana. A contactless collection will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at locations in Woodstock, Atlanta and Stockbridge.

“We’re starting to see some more showers here in North Georgia as we move through Wednesday afternoon,” Monahan said. “But by Thursday and Friday that tropical moisture moves in our direction with some better chances for rain. Not a washout, but it will be wet at times.”

On Tuesday morning, it is warm but dry at the bus stops for kids headed off to school. Temperatures are in the low 70s across the city, according to Channel 2. Monahan said bus stops should be dry on the way home, too.

“Most of us will be dry through the afternoon,” he said. “A little cooler with some more clouds for this afternoon.”

The projected high is 86 degrees. According to Channel 2, temperatures should really fall back Wednesday as rain chances increase. Wednesday’s projected high is 81, and highs in the low 80s are in the forecast through Friday.

With dry pavement, the Tuesday morning drive is off to a smooth start. There are no major delays on any metro Atlanta interstates or highways, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The ride is “looking fantastic from the Southside” on I-75, traffic reporter Heather Catlin said. And trip times are holding steady on Ga. 400 and I-85 out of North Fulton and Gwinnett at 6:30 a.m., she said.
