Two people were killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on I-85 northbound at Highway 316 in Gwinnett County, police said.

The crash involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger car, the Georgia Department of Transportation said. The tractor-trailer, which was carrying tens of thousands of pounds of steel, hit the car, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Traffic was reopened on I-85 about 4:30 p.m., Channel 2 reported. However, delays were reported back to I-285, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Drivers can use Satellite Boulevard, Buford Highway, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard or Highway 29 as alternates. However, the alternates also are jammed, the traffic center reported.
