Tractor-trailer crash on I-285 sends concrete flying
Two separate wrecks involving tractor-trailers made a mess of traffic Tuesday night, long after the evening rush hour should have ended.
A tractor-trailer heading northbound on I-285 crashed into the median wall around 8:30 p.m., sending concrete chunks into lanes of traffic.
All northbound lanes of I-285, just north of I-20, and several southbound lanes remained closed shortly before 10 p.m. as cleanup continued, according to Gordy Wright, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol. Atlanta police were assisting state troopers with the crash, he said.
Northbound lanes re-opened shortly before 11 p.m.
Investigators believe the tractor-trailer hydroplaned, causing it to hit the median in several places, Wright said.
“The impacts knocked chunks of concrete from the median wall into the southbound lanes, where at least nine vehicles ran over the scattered debris, disabling and damaging several of them,” Wright said in an emailed statement.
No injuries were reported.
“I just think God I was able to walk away and not hurt anyone in the process,” Quincy Cox, the tractor-trailer’s driver, told Channel 2 Action News.
In a separate incident, a wreck involving a tractor-trailer temporarily closed several lanes of I-85 northbound at I-285 in DeKalb County, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. No one was injured.
