THURSDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Heavy rain, storms in the afternoon forecast

Aug 20, 2020

Rain boots. Poncho. Umbrella. Those are essential items that you won’t want to be without on Thursday, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“We are set for what will be a wet day today,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. With a 70% chance of rain, heavy downpours and storms will soak nearly every part of the state for the majority of the day.

For the moment, things are quiet and relatively dry. Temperatures in metro Atlanta are nestled in the mid-60s and low 70s, making for a comfortable morning. Around 1 p.m., temps will tick up to the day’s high of 86 degrees.

“It’s going to be another day where we will stop short of 90 degrees,” Monahan said.

That’s mostly due to the cloud cover and wet weather that will move into the area in the afternoon.

“Later this afternoon, that’s when it’s going to get really wet,” Monahan said.

Around 2 p.m., downpours will dump buckets on the state. There’s a chance that Thursday’s storms could be severe, with lightning, strong wind gusts and hail all possible, according to Channel 2.

“Everybody in North Georgia, in northwest Georgia, through metro Atlanta, and down toward lake country will see at least some level of risk today,” he said.

The downpours will continue well into the evening, the news station reported.

Drivers in DeKalb County will want to stay away from I-285 near Ashford Dunwoody Road, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

All westbound lanes of the interstate were temporarily closed after a tractor-trailer caught fire and spilled fuel onto the roadway near Ashford Dunwoody Road, the Traffic Center reported.

While two left lanes reopened around 6 a.m., heavy delays remain. The trip time between Buford Highway and Ashford Dunwoody Road exceeded an hour at 6:30 a.m., the Traffic Center reported.
